PASTORAL COUNCIL

The Pastoral Council is comprised of twelve parishioners who are chosen by lot to be a part of the Council for a three year term. There is no age, ethnic, nor gender qualifications or restrictions. The only requirement is that the person be a registered parishioner. Married couples cannot serve on the same council unless a unique need has been identified by the council.

The council meets on the 2nd Saturday of each month at 8:30 a.m. at the Parish office and is open to all parishioners. Anyone wishing to formally address the council or contact any of the members may do so by emailing info@smarymag.org.

How does one join the Council?

Each year in the Fall, parishioners are notified that a new council preparation process is beginning. They are asked to nominate themselves or any other parishioner for a position on the council. When a group of possible candidates has been formed, the following (taken from the Pastoral Council Operating Principles) goes into effect:

V. Selection of Membership
"Nominations will be made by a nomination committee composed of members of the council and by pastor with input from council, staff, and any parishioner. Parishioners may self-nominate. Each person who agrees to become a candidate will enter the formation process. If, after the formation period, more candidates remain in the program than can be placed on the council, lots will be drawn equal to the number needed to fill the open slots on the council." (Saint Mary Magdalene Parish Pastoral Council Operating Principles)

What is this "formation process"?

The formation process is required for any candidate for the council. Meeting once-a-month for about seven months, the process deals with the theology of the Church and management of Pastoral Councils. At the conclusion of the process, those remaining in the group are given the opportunity to have their name drawn by lot to fill the next vacancies on the council.

Interested in the Pastoral Council?

Are you or someone you know interested in being a part of the upcoming process? Just give Richard Schonhoff a call (480-279-6737) or email (richard@smarymag.org). In the meantime, feel free to ask any pastoral council member for more information.
